Focus on Rabies

Rabies is still present and almost always fatal if left untreated.1

  • Every year 30,000 to 60,000 people come into contact with potentially rabid animals in the US and need to receive rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).2
  • The essential components of PEP are prompt local treatment of wounds and administration of both human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and rabies vaccine.3
  • Any suspicious bite or scratch should be assessed immediately and treated if needed. Medical decisions should not be delayed.3,4
